Medical Terminology Interview
During the semester, we were assigned medical terminology assignments biweekly to help us better understand the language that is used in the healthcare field. Once completed, we were then asked to interview someone such as a nurse or doctor to see how they use med term in the real life and reflect on it. I choose to interview my mom, a medical assistant at a private doctor’s office. Below is an example of a question I asked, her response, and my reflection.
-6th question: How can medical abbreviations cause confusion?
-Response: Sometimes abbreviations can have more than one meaning. “PT” can mean physical therapy, prothrombin time, or patient. You must have an understanding what context the abbreviation is being used.
-My opinion or questions: This is something that I feel like no matter if you think you know the context it’s always good to double check! If you are unsure, ask!
